An Overview of Dry, Preaction and Deluge Systems

This presentation provides an overview of the different types of dry systems including traditional dry, preaction and deluge systems. We will review what type of systems tend to be chosen for specific scenarios as well as provide an understanding of the NFPA requirements that exist for dry type sprinkler systems. The various initiating sequences will be reviewed for each type of system, including single interlock and double interlock preaction systems with both pneumatic and electric actuation. An overview of the DPV-1 and DV-5A valves will be provided along with various accessory devices commonly used in these systems.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify the difference between a wet pipe, dry pipe, deluge and single or double interlock preaction sprinkler system.
  2. Select the appropriate type of system for the given application.
  3. Identify the sequence of events for a wet, dry, or preaction sprinkler system to operate.
  4. Understand the equipment and installation requirements, as they relate to operation and maintenance of each system type.

Melisa Rodriguez is Sr. Manager of Industry Relations with Johnson Controls. She is a licensed Fire Protection Professional Engineer with 21 years of experience in the industry and has held various roles including Project Manager, Designer, Lead Fire Protection Engineer, and Senior Business Development Manager. She is also NICET certified Level IV in Water Based Systems Layout. She earned her Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering and MBA from the University of Minnesota located in Minneapolis, MN. Melisa serves on the MN board of licensure (AELSLAGID), is Vice-Chair of the MN Governor’s Council for Fire Prevention and Control, a principal member of NFPA 14, 13R/13D and 88A Technical Committees, alternate member of the NFPA 13 Discharge Committee, NFSA Future Leadership Committee Vice-Chair, SFPE Virtual Learning Subcommittee Chair, and Past President of the MN Chapter Society of Fire Protection Engineers.
